· Summary: This is more of an “Idiot’s Guide” style of book. It is easy to open up and find what you are looking for whether it is how high can an Eb clarinet play or what are the technical considerations for an oboe player. It is a down and dirty guide that doesn’t get bogged down by details.
· Personal Comments: This is an easy to follow and very accessible book which would be the first book I would grab with instrumental concerns. What it lacks in detail it makes up for with ease of use. This is the book to grab before you grab the big heavy and weighty (read more scholarly) books on the same subject. The title of this book is Essentials of Orchestration but it isn’t really an orchestration book. It is an instrumentation book almost exclusively.
· Suggested Use in ClassroomThis book wouldn’t be used until much later in the school year. Once instrumentation is brought up I would make great use of this book for a quick and easy guide to standard music instrumentation.
